Amazon’s Alexa for Apps, a new feature that allows users to open apps using voice commands on iOS and Android devices, will soon be launched. The feature is currently available in its preview form for select developers.
Currently, Siri on iOS and Google Assistant on Android are already capable of interacting with apps. For example, Siri can book you a Uber on iOS and similarly, Google Assistant can play your favorite show on Netflix, both hands-free through voice commands. “Alexa for Apps” is part of Amazon’s strategy to position Alexa as an alternative to Siri and Google Assistant, despite not having its own mobile OS.
In the end, “Alexa for Apps” will be more work for developers as they now have to make the apps work with multiple smart assistants on mobile devices.
