Unfortunate for Australia, New Zealand comes out on top in a final over thriller as heroics from Stoinis and Sams go in vain.
Batting first at University Oval, New Zealand was put in a great position with big knocks coming from Guptill, Skipper Williamson (53 off 35) and Neesham (45 off 16). Opener Guptill missed out on a century when he fell for 97 in the 15th over. Kane Richardson bagged 3 wickets in the on slaught of bowlers with the hosts setting the target at 220 off their 20 overs.
Chasing a steep target, Australia didn’t have the best of the starts as their left hand opener Wade fell for 24 in 4th over. Shortly after, the visiting team lost their captain Aaron Finch. With pressure mounting, Santner produced 3 wickets in a single over pushing Australia way behind in the game with score reading 113 for 6 after 13 overs.
Just when Australia needed Super heroes to save the game, they came in the form of Marcus Stoinis and Daniel Sams. Both the batsmen took New Zealand bowlers to the fence more than a dozen times to bring their team back into the game. Just when all guns were blazing and 16 runs required off the final over, Sams (41 off 15) fell for a full toss trying to smash it out of the ground. After claiming Sams’ wicket, Neesham’s job was not yet over as the dangerous Stoinis was very much there at the crease. Needing 2 hits to fence from the final 2 balls, Stoinis (78 off 37) was caught by Southee trying to clear the air.
