In an unfortunate incident, an AirIndia plane crashed into a valley just after it attempted to land in Kozhikode airport.

The flight IX-1344, a Boeing 737, was traveling from Dubai to Kozhikode and was carrying close to 190 passengers including 10 children and 7 crew members. 19 people who were onboard the jet have been reported dead and many others have been injured. Rescue operations are in progress.

Slippery conditions on the runway caused by heavy downpour are said to have caused the plane to skid off the runway and then the plane tumbled down a slope (10.6m) before cracking in half.

This kind of mishaps, due to monsoon, have happened in the past in 2010 and 2019, both in Mangalore and have caused damage to human lives.
