Shakuntala Devi trailer: Vidya Balan’s math genius is maths vs motherhood

Shakuntala Devi trailer has Vidya Balan essaying the role of the woman known as the ‘human computer’ with wit and charm. The film, releasing on Amazon Prime, also features Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta. The trailer opens with a quirky Vidya who charms with her funny antics as she introduces the viewers to her best friend ‘math’. She says it has no rules, only magic.

The impressive trailer shows Vidya stepping into the shoes of the maths genius to utmost perfection. The trailer goes on to show Shakuntala from going to London to pursue her ambition to finally marrying the man of her dreams, everything looks like a cakewalk for Shakuntala Devi until she becomes a mother.

The two are seen at loggerheads as Shakuntala Devi blames motherhood for upending her desires, This element of grey to Shakuntala’s character might work in its favour as the audience has been served the quintessential goody-two-shoes biopic multiple times in the recent past.

Shakuntala Devi is now a household name since Vidya Balan decided to step into her rather large shoes. The biopic, Shakuntala Devi – The Human Computer, is the story of the math genius. The emphasis, therefore, is on her superhuman ability to multiply, divide faster than the speed of light. Indeed, it is a story worth telling. Indeed she is a figure worth all the attention. But perhaps, her humanitarian side needs as much attention, if not more. She, was, after all, the first gay rights activist, even before we had collectively coined the term. Will we see this side of her in the biopic?
